  1. The cuff is usually made of durable fabric with a closure mechanism to secure it in place.

  2. Pressure Gauge: The pressure gauge is typically a dial with a needle that indicates pressure in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Modern digital sphygmomanometers may display the pressure digitally. The gauge measures the pressure exerted by the cuff on the brachial artery in the arm.

  3. Inflation Mechanism: Traditionally, sphygmomanometers have a hand-operated bulb or a manual pump to inflate the cuff. When squeezed, the bulb or pump increases the pressure in the cuff. However, there are also automatic or electronic versions that inflate the cuff automatically at the press of a button.

How It Works:

To take a blood pressure measurement using a sphygmomanometer, the cuff is wrapped around the upper arm and positioned over the brachial artery. The cuff is inflated until it compresses the artery enough to stop blood flow. Then, the pressure is gradually released while a stethoscope is used to listen for the return of blood flow. The pressure at which the first sound of blood flow is heard (the systolic pressure) and the pressure at which the sound disappears (the diastolic pressure) are recorded. These measurements provide important information about the health of the cardiovascular system.
